Common Printer Problems

Modern printers optimize your workflows and reduce paper waste. But like any other device, they’re prone to certain issues. These problems can reduce your productivity, which is why it’s essential to identify and address the causes.

Here are six of the most common printer problems and how to resolve them.

Problem 1 – Toner on Your Cartridge or Inside the Package

Manufacturers may fill toner reservoirs to full capacity. As a result, some of the ink can leak during transport, which is especially the case with air transit. Changes in air pressure cause the issue, but the impact on your product should be minimal.

In most cases, you can remove the toner with compressed air or a dry microfiber cloth. Just be careful not to touch the surface of your imaging drum to avoid print quality problems.

Problem 2 – Your Cartridge Doesn’t Print

If you’ve replaced your cartridge but still can’t print documents, the culprit may be the previous storage solution. You might have stacked them upside down for months or weeks, causing the ink to settle at either end of your cartridge.

To address the issue, store your cartridges horizontally for a couple of hours to enable the ink to distribute properly throughout the unit.

Problem 3 – Sports or Streaks on Your Printouts

This malfunction can also be caused by improper storage. There are several potential solutions:

  • Clean the cartridge with a cloth.
  • Blow contaminants from your cartridge using compressed air.
  • Make sure any protective seals or strips aren’t blocking the cartridge.

Problem 4 – Recurring Error Messages

Many users receive puzzling error messages. If standard solutions don’t do the trick (e.g., restarting the device), you can try the following method:

  1. Open your printer cover.
  2. Remove your cartridge.
  3. Reinstall it, making sure the chip is in direct contact with the sensors.
  4. Close the cover and shut down your printer.
  5. Wait for approximately 30 seconds before turning it back on.

If the problem persists, you may need a different cartridge.

Problem 5 – Printer Tells You the Cartridge Is Empty

You can apply the solution in the previous section to address the problem. In other words, remove and reinstall the cartridge properly to make sure it’s connected to the sensor.

Alternatively, select the new cartridge option on your printer. For the best results, consult your instruction manual.

Problem 6 – The Cartridge Appears Bigger Than the Original

You may receive bigger cartridges than the original if the vendor sends a higher-yield model. You should be able to fit them inside your machine, but if you’re having trouble installing your cartridge, reach out to your provider. They might provide specific instructions or send a replacement.
